In anticipation of Hispanic Heritage Month join us for a presentation by Soileh Padilla-Mayer, Cónsul Titular de México en Kansas City (Head Consul of The Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City) discussing the Mexican War of Independence. The presentation will cover the 11-year armed conflict (1810-1821) that ended approximately 300 years of Spanish colonial rule in Mexico. The conflict began with Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s “Grito de Dolores,” which was a call for rebellion against Spanish authority and social inequality. The movement was influenced by Enlightenment principles such as liberty and self-governance.
The Mexican War of Independence marked a significant period in Mexican history, resulting in the country’s emergence as a sovereign state after centuries under colonial administration. The discussion will explore the question of what sovereignty means for Mexicans in Kansas City and abroad.
