Position Title: Barista / Culinary Associate – Elixir, Soda Fountain
Position Description
The Museum of Kansas City is seeking Baristas/Culinary Associates for Elixir, the Museum’s soda fountain. Elixir is a 690-square-foot space seating 18–20 guests and is located on the lower level of Corinthian Hall, adjacent to a prep kitchen and near the Billiard Room, restrooms, and a catering kitchen.
Elixir offers:
- Grab-and-go, pre-packaged, and ready-to-serve items, including charcuterie plates, freshly baked cookies, chips, scones, sodas and other carbonated beverages, juices, and more; and
- Prepared food and beverage items, including ice cream scoops, sundaes, phosphates, coffee and espresso drinks, tea, wine, beer, select cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages.
Guests may enjoy their purchases in Elixir, throughout the Museum grounds (weather permitting), or take items to go.
Hours of Operation
Elixir is currently open 26 hours per week:
- Thursday: 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (9 hours)
- Friday & Saturday: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (6 hours each day)
- Sunday: 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (5 hours)
Elixir’s hours and menu will expand strategically over time.
Key Responsibilities
The Barista/Culinary Associate is primarily responsible for:
- Opening and closing procedures
- Preparing and serving espresso, coffee, and tea beverages
- Preparing and serving alcoholic beverages in accordance with applicable laws and policies
- Scooping ice cream and preparing sundaes, phosphates, and other specialty items
- Serving pre-packaged and ready-to-serve foods (e.g., sandwiches, salads, cookies, muffins, pastries, etc.)
- Food preparation, including charcuterie boards, sandwiches, and baking cookies
- Restocking supplies and tracking inventory
- Operating café equipment safely and efficiently
- Using the point-of-sale (POS) system to process transactions
- Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards
- Adhering to all City of Kansas City, Missouri Health Department regulations
On occasion, this position will also support exhibit openings, Museum-hosted programs and events.
Schedule & Employment Status
- Must be available to work Thursday through Sunday during Elixir’s operating hours
- Part-time, non-exempt position
- Anticipated schedule: 10–22 hours per week
- Starting hourly rate: $16.00/hour
- Tips are in addition to the hourly wage
Qualification Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in the restaurant or hospitality industry
- Prior server training, alcohol responsibility training, and a current food handler license preferred
- Experience as both a barista and bartender, including espresso preparation and alcoholic beverage service
- Familiarity with point-of-sale systems and opening/closing procedures
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and work collaboratively as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to exceptional customer service
